Towed yacht is first movement in weeks

SPECIALIST equipment is needed if hauliers are to meet towing regulations, an industry expert has said.

Following a couple of weeks of no boat movements, Aqua-Star yesterday moved an 18-tonne yacht, and managing director Geoff Willson explained how.

'It is a self-loading boat hauling rig. The towing unit is matched to the hydraulic rear unit and the tractor we use is the largest on the island. It is a 4x4 and has brakes on all four wheels. As it is attached it counts as one unit,' he said.

Police clamped down on boat movements across the island after it was discovered that the Environment Department should have been issuing licences to hauliers carrying more than 750kg unladen weight on trailers without brakes.

The move resulted in boat movements across the island coming to a virtual standstill.
