Gatwick and Heathrow both unveiled multi-billion pound expansion plans yesterday to the UK Airports Commission, charged with deciding how to expand air capacity in the UK.

Under the controversial plans, Gatwick would increase to two runways and Heathrow either to three or have its existing northern runway extended to the west. A n unlikely third option would see the building of 'Boris Island' – a hub airport in the Thames Estuary with up to six runways.

External Transport Group chairman deputy Paul Luxon said although the island could not exert influence over the eventual outcome, the hope was to see an improvement in airlinks for islanders.

'Guernsey is a very small part of the jigsaw, but what we hope is that key routes are either retained or developed which would lead to better choices and options for business travellers, islanders and tourists.'
