Deputies question motives behind review of Medical Officer of Health role
MOTIVES have been questioned behind a successful bid to review the role of Guernsey's Medical Officer of Health – currently held by Dr Stephen Bridgman.
But Treasury minister Deputy Gavin St Pier denied any ulterior intent in his request to review the 115-year-old role, through an amendment which proceeded debate on the annual report issued by Dr Bridgman, pictured, as MoH.
Several deputies raised suspicions over the reasons behind the move, including Matt Fallaize, who warned against 'wing clipping' Dr Bridgman.
Deputy Andrew Le Lievre also warned of the vast health and social issues that existed in Guernsey and the need for continued independent professional advice.
'We the population must be dependent and rely on the impartiality of the Medical Officer of Health to address our concerns without fear of constraint,' he said.
Deputy Peter Sherbourne said he understood the need for a review from time-to-time, but was suspicious.
Despite the concerns, Deputy St Pier said it was simply the case that he had noticed the position had been in place since 1899 and healthcare had clearly moved on since then.
