But bee keepers at the Floral St Peter's 'bee-friendly' day also felt islanders could be doing more to help the local population of the insect.

Mike and Ruth Collins have been keeping bees for about the last 30 years and have 12 hives, including two in their St Peter's garden.

Their bees produce about 250lbs of honey every year.

'I would say there is a problem of dwindling bee numbers, but fortunately in Guernsey we have lots of forage and plants all over the island, which makes a difference,' Mr Collins, a former deputy, said.

'But it is also important that people plant more bee-friendly plants to encourage numbers.'
