Paid parking U-turn likely if buses continue to falter
DEPUTIES who voted in favour of paid parking have threatened to go back on the plans if Guernsey's faltering bus service is not transformed.
As the strength of public anger continued to grow over the weekend, States members who approved the 60p-an-hour long-stay charge in Town warned that the island's much-maligned bus service must be up to scratch before any fees are even considered.
Other politicians in support of the new transport strategy also predicted that a bid to overturn the decision was likely from one of the 19 opposing deputies and delays to parking charges could be pushed into the next States term in 2016.
There were further calls for the bus service to be assessed independently before paid parking wasever given the final go-ahead.
Deputy Michelle Le Clerc, who backed paid parking last week, said she might even consider laying a petition in the future to block its introduction temporarily.
'Personally, if the service is not up to where we want it to be, I may bring a requete myself to say, "let's stop paid parking until the bus service provides a viable alternative",' she said.
