A BURGLARY victim has been left with terrifying nightmares after his shop was broken into.

Pound World Plus owner Nigel Staples admitted he sometimes sleeps in the Bridge shop to protect himself from being a victim again.

He said he had been left feeling totally violated and upset when 33-year-old Russell High broke into the Bridge-based shop and used an axe to open a tobacco case before making away with hundreds of pounds- worth of items.

High was sentenced to 15 months in prison for the incident and ordered to pay £155.50 compensation to Mr Staples plus £250 for the trouble he has caused him.

It is now the third time the shop owner has been burgled – twice before at the Barras Convenience Store, which he has run for the last three years.

'Some nights I have stayed in my shop to guard it because I am so afraid of being burgled again. I was always one who thought Guernsey was a safe place and there wasn't much crime but now I have an insight and I know just how violated it feels.

'A lot of people think having your home burgled is different to having a business burgled but it is exactly the same. It is everything I own, everything I have worked for, all contained in that premises.'
