Many took to Twitter to express their confusion over #YDGTIL, which appeared to be completely alien to images of picturesque Guernsey scenes carrying the message 'wake up in the wild'.

In response, Visit Guernsey has responded to critics congratulating them for noticing what turned out to be a 'You Don't Get This In London' marketing campaign.

Guernsey director of marketing and tourism Mike Hopkins confirmed the advert, aimed at people looking to take short breaks, had been running for some weeks and would be running for another couple of months. 'There has been a lot of talk about it,' he said.

'There have been some negative comments, a bit of confusion.

One of the people commenting on the mystery tag was David Robson, who works at a London-based PR agency. 'We've made an ad so must add a hashtag, even if it means nothing to consumers,' he said. '#advertising #fail #YDGTIL (whatever that is).'
