Town fly-tippers may be caught on camera

MORE CCTV could be installed in Town to tackle fly-tipping. One of the latest hotspots is Contree Mansell.

St Peter Port constable Dennis Le Moignan said it was aware of the problem.

'We are thinking of putting up a camera as people are starting to fly-tip,' he said. Those caught would face fines. Although amounts vary, Mr Le Moignan said some who the parish have caught have had to pay £400. 'We have about five CCTV cameras and they have certainly helped,' he said.

The Valnord area, Les Petites Fontaines and Burnt Lane were previous fly-tipping hotspots, but the cameras have acted as a deterrent, he said.

In the street next to Trinity Church, there is a large bin for residents' domestic waste which is attracting fly-tippers.

Late last week it was empty but rubbish bags and bike tyres were left next to it. Neighbours said it was becoming 'unsightly'.

Lorraine Lane, (pictured) partner at In Any Event, said the problems had arisen fairly recently but that bigger fines could help put people off committing the crime.

'It is not nice to look at,' she said. 'I'm not sure if CCTV would help as it could be an invasion of privacy, but there should be a

heftier fine.'
