Software engineer Adrian Ritchie, 33, has been planning for years to get on his BMW R1200 and ride off into the sunset. Now his bike is already in the UK, ready to fly to Canada and Adrian will be close behind it.

'I went on a trip to Morocco with a big group of people, but I wanted to do something that was more adventurous,' he said. He will be flying to Halifax, Canada, where he will take the Trans Canada Adventure Trail – a 15,000km route across the country, which ends in British Columbia.

He is aiming to spend two months in Canada and up to four months exploring America.

Adrian said he had no fixed itinerary for the American stage of his journey, although he hoped to visit Death Valley, Yosemite and Mount St Helens, as well as exploring the Appalachian trail on the eastern side of the country.

'I will be talking to the people I meet and if they suggest going somewhere, I want to be able to go,' he said.

Along the way he will be joined for a month by his partner Ingrid Ellen. While he has left his job to take on this adventure, he hopes to come back to Guernsey to start up his own business.
