Deputies yesterday approved proposals from Treasury and Resources, allowing the department to authorise any required borrowing for the States-owned airline, either directly from the States or with it acting as a guarantor.

Treasury minister Gavin St Pier outlined the need to replace the ageing fleet, including some of the economic and safety concerns of the single-crew Trislander aircraft.

He also rebutted claims made in a campaign from some Alderney residents for T&R to withdraw the plans.

Alderney States representatives Louis Jean and Neil Harvey were among those who support the borrowing, which would replace the Trislander fleet with Dorniers.

Deputy Treasury minister Jan Kuttelwascher also warned of the danger that the ageing Trislanders could be grounded by regulators in future.

'We are trying to preserve the integrity of a vital service to Alderney and this we have determined is a best way forward,' he said.
