'Incredibly lucky' Roger back in the swim soon

AFTER a serious car crash that left him with 20 rib fractures, 73-year-old Channel swimmer Roger Allsopp has pledged that he will be getting back in the water this winter.

The retired surgeon was involved in a crash in June, when his classic Alvis smashed head-on into a car coming the other way.

He was thrown from the car onto the gravel car park at Vazon and spent a month in hospital.

But he is now back on his feet and fighting his way back to health. 'I have been incredibly lucky,' he said.

'I am just so thankful that I did not have a head or neck injury.'

The classic Alvis car had been in a shed for 20 years when Mr Allsopp discovered it last summer. With help from his friends he spent the winter restoring it. The morning of the crash he had driven it to Cobo to have a swim and was on his way home along the coast.
