Noise from power station 'like being in a plane,' says deputy

NOISE and vibrations from the power station continue to blight the health of nearby residents, it has been claimed.

Despite various modifications made by Guernsey Electricity, neighbours said the continuous noise and vibrations were giving them migraines and headaches as well as causing dizziness.

In response, the utility said it was keen to improve matters where it could, and had been making alterations to the engines and engine buildings, including adding noise shields to vents and restricting night-time operations.

It also said its new acoustic barrier had already reduced noise levels at the site considerably.

But this was disputed by residents and Vale deputy Mary Lowe. Deputy Lowe said it had been an issue for some time.

She said the problems centred around the dynamic of the site, now with D2 and the new generator inside, as the noise bounced off the other stations and properties.

'I've walked around the track that is right on the gable of some of the properties and when the plant is on, it's like you're in a plane.

'Several times we have asked Guernsey Electricity to re-house these people.

'We asked from right at the beginning that they be moved on a temporary basis until the problems have been resolved. Every time they have refused. Now we have four Vale residents that are suffering ill-health that ties in with the height of the readings.'
