GBA 'must stop drug trafficking at source'

STOPPING drug trafficking at its source is the 'gold standard' for the Guernsey Border Agency.

Member of the law enforcement senior management team, Peter Knee, was speaking after two men were found guilty of importing hundreds of thousands of pounds-worth of drugs into the island by sea.

Mr Knee said the core focus of the GBA's drug trafficking strategy was to ensure the right amount of resources and time were directed towards what were deemed to be the most significant threats in terms of harm and damage to the community.

That included working with other agencies to prevent drugs ever reaching the island.

'We believe that the drugs in this case were from the Continent and, where possible, we work with other jurisdictions to prevent importation from taking place,' he said.

'We have had success with that in other jurisdictions where a threat has been detected and taken out at the source.

'We're looking and working with other jurisdictions regularly – there can be threats from the UK, Jersey, from France, anywhere, using small vessels, the post, courier, travelling by air or sea. We have to look at all of this and we need the public to help be our eyes and ears to understand what's happening in the island so we can help protect it.'
