Failing to carry out cable repairs now could triple cost

'PREVENTATIVE' £5m. repairs on the Guernsey-Jersey cable link would potentially triple in cost if it was left and failed.

The utility company's chief executive Alan Bates and corporate strategy director Sally-Ann David both yesterday pledged that the multi-million-pound maintenance work, being started this month, would give rise to minimum costs and disruption while the cable was out of action.

Mr Bates, pictured, said that by choosing its own time to undertake the repairs, it would keep the amount of time the cable was unavailable to a minimum.

He said repairing the unexpected cable failure in 2012 left the undersea link out of action for three to four months, whereas the current work was due to last just three to four weeks.

Mrs David also welcomed the timing and cost-effective nature of the work.

When asked how much the repair costs could rise, if left until another failure occurred in the cable link, she warned it could as much as triple.
