Give us spaces not tickets, say Vale Primary parents

IMPROVED pedestrian safety is the main thrust behind new traffic management measures around Vale Primary School, the Environment Department has said.

But the changes have been slammed as 'a load of rubbish' by one parent, with another saying that only more parking would improve matters.

From Monday, during term-time only, new restrictions will prohibit stopping mean it will be prohibited to stop in Hougue Ricart from 15 metres north of its junction with La Croix du Bois to a point 55 metres further north.

The restrictions will be enforced between 8.30am and 9am and from 2.45pm to 3.30pm.

An Environment spokeswoman said the additional measures come after the department introduced revised traffic management rules last September.

These were monitored in the last few months and have been discussed by the department, with the school and Guernsey Police. In response to this the changes, including no-waiting signs and the relocation of the school bus bay, were made.

'The purpose of the clearway experiment is to prohibit parking and unloading in Hougue Ricart around school start and finish times, with the benefit of achieving smoother traffic flow,' said the spokeswoman.

'Its introduction follows reports from Guernsey Police of a minority of drivers choosing to pick up or drop off children along this road, which has a detrimental impact on traffic flow and makes the job of the school special constable more difficult.

'Similarly, there have been reports of drivers choosing to park in the painted walkway on the northern side of La Croix du Bois so the department is introducing parking restrictions here for the benefit of pedestrian safety.'
