And a permanent home for the historically important wreck could be on the horizon.

The 2,000-year-old Roman ship's timbers were uncovered in St Peter Port Harbour in the 1980s, but for decades there have been difficulties over how the wood is stored, due to the timbers' size and specialist requirements.

Museum director Jason Monaghan confirmed the wooden pieces have now been protected in bubble wrap, loaded onto pallets and then put on three trailers, ready for today's voyage.

The timbers will be stored temporarily at the former Post Office building on Guelles Road. It was costing the States £3,000 a year to keep the timbers at the Mary Rose Trust in the UK.
