Condor ensured service before vessels' sale

COMMERCE and Employment minister Kevin Stewart has given reassurances that conditions had been put in place to ensure emergency contingencies were covered after ferry operator Condor sold two of its vessels.

Deputy Stewart, who is chairman of the External Transport Group, said detailed operating conditions were already present through the memorandum of understanding Condor held with the States.

He said that plans were also in hand to bring proposed legislation to the States in the coming months which would allow Guernsey to sign the agreement with Condor Ferries, as the States of Jersey had done last year.

His reassurances follow Condor announcing it had sold both Condor Vitesse and Condor Express, to make way for its new larger £50m. trimaran, currently known as Condor 102.

Deputy Stewart said that while Guernsey still had only a memorandum of understanding with Condor, it still ensured adequate contingencies were in place.

'Both Jersey's operating agreement and the Guernsey MoU place detailed operating conditions upon Condor, including a requirement for adequate contingency plans in the event that a vessel should become unserviceable,' he said.
