Politicians to have final say on donkey statue idea

A KICKING donkey statue would obstruct views of the harbour lighthouse, planners have said as part of their recommendation that the scheme be rejected.

But the politicians will have the final say on the project at an open planning meeting next week.

Geoff and Jennie Dorey submitted the application to put the bronze sculpture close to the Castle Breakwater.

But St Peter Port parish constables and the Guernsey Arts Commission raised concerns about the location and the negative connotations of the kicking animal – and the planners agreed.

A department spokesman said that while the breakwater was not a protected building, it was a historic and unique structure.

'It is considered that the silhouette of the column and donkey, whether against sea or sky, will not enhance or conserve the character or appearance of the area,' he wrote in the report.

'In views from Castle Emplacement and pier, it is likely to obstruct views to the lighthouse.'

He also raised concerns that it would detract from Castle Cornet.
