Sunday trading: 'give retailer the choice whether to open'

RETAILERS should have the choice to open on a Sunday and it is time to give them the chance, the Chamber of Commerce president has said.

Tony Rowbotham, pictured, was speaking after Commerce and Employment announced that as part of its 2015 business plan, it would bring a report to the States on the issue later this year.

Tackling the long-running issue should not be shied away from, Mr Rowbotham said.

'I think it is very sensible that they intend reviewing the matter. The retailer and consumer should be given the freedom to choose. Some retailers will open, some won't. I think it will be seasonal and retailers will respond to consumer demand.

'What people forget is that it does not obligate retailers to open on a Sunday. I think the population and visitors would expect us to review it.'
