Bigger buses struggle to get around terminus turning point

CHANGES to the layout of South Esplanade will improve coach-turning capabilities at a proposed pick-up point, after a trial yesterday revealed it took some vehicles three attempts to get around the hairpin bend.

Guernsey Harbours is proposing to convert short-stay parking beside the bus terminus into coach laybys, to be used to collect and drop-off cruise ship passengers.

However, there have been worries that the narrow one-way road – which includes a 180-degree turn by the public toilets – would not be suitable for longer vehicles.

Public Services minister Scott Ogier said with a 35% rise in cruise liner passengers expected this year, the new site – which will replace the White Rock – was needed.

Intransit and Island Coachways, along with Executive Cars and Islands Taxis, all brought down vehicles to see how they would fare on the tight bend.

While some of smaller vehicles got around in a single attempt, or with a second turn, the larger 43-seater vehicles – which are about 10-metres long – struggled and required three attempts to get around the corner, without overhanging the pavement.

Island Coachways managing director Hannah Beacom said all the company's vehicles were needed on busy cruise liner days, so they all needed to be able to operate in the proposed set-up.

'I think we were most worried about the exit, but that is OK,' she said.

'It will be far easier if the plans go through.'
