WATCH - Power cable repairs will finish on time

PREVENTATIVE repair work on the undersea power cable link between Guernsey and Jersey is on schedule to finish within a few weeks.

Published

Work started towards the end of last month after concerns were raised about a section 500 metres off Les Terres Point, near Havelet Bay.

The specialist ship Ndurance – operated by Dutch firm VBMS – has been undertaking the project, which firstly involved uncovering the cable, which is about 30 metres below the surface.

A remote control submersible located the fault and made the first cut in the cable.

The end was then lifted up onto the vessel and engineers joined a new section of cable onto it before it was lowered carefully back to the seabed.

Guernsey Electricity corporate strategy director Sally-Ann David said a second cut and joint would be carried out this week before Ndurance and its crew leave on Friday.

'I am pleased to say that everything is on schedule and progressing well and hopefully we will be reconnected in a couple of weeks.

'The relationship between us and the contractors has been really good and we have all worked well together.'
