Building firm redundancies 'will hit smaller contractors'

STIFFER competition for work will be facing smaller contractors and self-employed tradesmen as Guernsey's major building firms cut their workforce.

This was the prediction from some of the independent bosses and self-employed builders within the construction industry, who said they had already seen more people decide to go it alone.

They also feared the major firms would be competing with them for some of the many medium-sized and smaller jobs and work still around in Guernsey.

It was announced this week that Rihoy and Son had slashed its workforce by a quarter in the last year. This follows previous reports that staff at RG Falla had recently been notified about possible redundancies.

Brian Shrigley, pictured, who runs BGS & Son builders and decorators, employs one other person and sub-contracts for bigger jobs, but fears that work could dry up for the trade further down the line.

'I can see six months down the line, unless something turns up, it is going to be a struggle for everyone,' he said.
