Carol Chippendale, 69, said she was walking out of Pound World Plus after buying milk when she tripped on the damaged pavement and fell to the floor.

She was now requesting compensation from PSD and speaking to the Citizens Advice Bureau to weigh up her options.

'I fell badly the Friday before last,' she said.

'I phoned States Works and they said they could do nothing.

'I phoned Guernsey Roads and they told me that they haven't got the money.

'It's always an excuse.

'They have the money for people on supplementary benefit that can work.

'It's not right is it? I was almost sick when I got home. I was crying – it was the shock of it all.

'It really shook me up.'
