Julie Tostevin, Kim Reece-Sheerin and Dominique Ogier's performance of Webber Love Trio earned them adjudicator Ian Hytch's third 'outstanding' of the festival and with it The Pauline Carre Memorial Trophy.

The class is traditionally one of the most competitive at the festival and one of the most popular with the audience.

'I think it represents the spirit of the Eisteddfod,' said Mrs Reece-Sheerin, 43, an HR officer with Butterfield Bank.

'Everybody wants everybody else to do well and it's all about making music.'

Mrs Reece-Sheerin and her vocal coach husband, Aindre, discovered the song on You Tube when preparing for a charity show they organised at St James last year. It features elements of three Andrew Lloyd-Webber songs.

Mrs Reece-Sheerin said she made first claim on The Unexpected Song and thought Miss Ogier would be perfect for I Don't Know How to Love Him for her debut appearance in the Festival.

'It's a tremendous honour,' said Miss Ogier, 25, a graphic designer.

'There were so many fantastic singers here tonight and I had no idea that we'd win.'
