Ballot boxes close at 10pm this evening with the latest BBC 'poll of polls' predicting that the Conservatives will carry 34% of the votes, closely followed by Labour with 33%, UKIP with 13% and the Liberal Democrats with 9%.
Deputy John Gollop predicted the Conservatives Party would end up with roughly 285 seats and once again form a coalition with the Lib Dems, with Labour getting 270 seats.
He said the result could lead to ramifications for the island.
'A referendum could adversely affect Guernsey if Britain decides once and for all to come out of Europe, because certain financial arrangements with the City and Europe would have to change in terms of the products we market internationally, there would also be a knock-on effect for the Policy Council and external affairs in terms of the management of the Brussels office,' he said.
'Guernsey would inevitably lose its Protocol 3 status and the 1973 relationship. The island would need to make a decision on whether to continue a similar relationship with the EU or stay as a Crown Dependency with the UK – that process could be uncomfortable.'
