'Inconvenient truth' of child poverty gap

AN 'INCONVENIENT TRUTH' exists in Guernsey that people born into a poorer background are less likely to succeed in life, the chairwoman of the Youth Commission has said.

Jane St Pier was speaking after the release of the Parry Report into Children's Social Care in the island – which was rated as 'inadequate' and said there was a 'lack of social mobility and a highly visible poorer population' which could lead to those born into poorer families being more unlikely to be successful.

Something had to be done to ensure those who were not from wealthy backgrounds had the same chances of succeeding, said Mrs St Pier.

Guernsey Community Foundation chairman Wayne Bulpitt agreed that evidence supported the assertion, and the community believing Guernsey to be a well-off island did not mean there were not those who were struggling.
