GPs' concerns met in ending manpower cap

DOCTORS in Guernsey are not scared of competition that could come from proposals to scrap the cap on GP numbers, local British Medical Association spokesman Dr Brian Parkin said.

The present system limits the number of full-time primary care doctors to 42, which has been an issue previously criticised by the regulator Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authority since 2012 and has been acknowledged as an issue by health minister Paul Luxon.

Dr Parkin, pictured, said the only concern held by existing doctors was the island being inundated by poorly qualified GPs.

However, he said HSSD seemed to have allayed these concerns in its proposals by ensuring certain standards and criteria were met.

'We did not think it would be very useful to be inundated with poorly qualified doctors, who would drive up costs and people would suffer,' he said.

'They do seem to have addressed that.'
