Rain delays work to restore two-lane traffic at the Quay

HEAVY rain yesterday morning meant work to reinstall two lanes of southbound traffic at the Town seafront could not be completed.

The single lane will remain in place for now, while a new date to finish the works will be arranged at the 'earliest possible opportunity'.

Workmen could be seen early yesterday morning redesigning the informal crossing, which included removing the blister paving and installing posts, chains and railings to allow for the reintroduction of two lanes.

But later in the day Environment said: 'Unfortunately, the road surface did not dry out sufficiently quickly this morning to enable the works to begin when the required resources were available to be able to commence and then complete the works in the same day.'

Campaign group Enough is Enough co-organiser Ray Marshall felt work to reverse the changes was 'long overdue'.

He was surprised to see that the work included converting the crossing back to how it used to be.
