Deputy calls for housing target analysis

HOUSING targets should be 'scientifically based', a deputy campaigning for first-time buyer help has said.

After a leading developer described the current policy, backed by Housing, of building 300 homes a year as unnecessary and outdated, Heidi Soulsby said this 13-year-old target was not addressing the current issues.

She did not rule out that a housing target might be needed, but said it was the figure which needed re-visiting.

'We have a housing target that is not scientifically measured and there is a case for having a stronger analysis of the requirement,' said Deputy Soulsby.

'The strategy that Housing supports, the evidence is not there. The crisis is that people cannot afford to buy houses – it is how hard it is to get on the property ladder.

'There seems to be an impasse at the moment, with Housing having their view and everyone else saying that is all well and good, but having a different point of view.

'We need to stimulate the market to move, without building more houses, and make it more affordable to get access to money for deposits.'
