Sergeant Laura Furby received a commendation at this year's Law Enforcement Awards. She felt the accolade was on behalf of the whole team who played their part in the stand-off.

She had attended a Health and Social Services Department property in St Sampson's where the defendant, who was subsequently sentenced to two years in prison for assault and other offences, was reported to be 'smashing up the place'.

Officers found him wielding a pointed wooden staircase spindle, but because Sergeant Furby had dealt with and pacified him on previous occasions, she went upstairs to talk to him.

Throughout the stand-off, the court heard how the defendant threatened to kill anyone else who came up the stairs and was holding knives and a syringe.

Sergeant Furby, who had already been commended by the Royal Court for her actions, said the whole team of officers 'played their part'.
