On the eve of Black Friday – the biggest shopping day of the year which will kick-start the high street gift-buying season and boost internet sales in Britain to an expected record of £1bn – a new campaign from the Guernsey Press is calling on shoppers here not to forget those stores on their doorstep.
'Although some online purchases may be inevitable, we urge people to remember their local economy needs them too,' said Guernsey Press managing director Mark Lewis.
'To help provide our retail sector with its own festive boost, today we are launching our Shop on the Rock appeal, backed by the Chamber of Commerce, to help raise awareness about keeping as much money on-island as possible.'
Mr Lewis said it was important for islanders to support local retailers.
'The sector employs thousands of local people keeping wages flowing around the Bailiwick of Guernsey, they pay their taxes here and have bills and mortgages to pay,' he said.
