'We could start tomorrow on a new Leopardess'

WORK ON a new sea fisheries vessels could start 'tomorrow', Aqua-Star Ltd's managing director has said.

Commerce and Employment was ordered by the States to review its plans to award the contract off-island and in an update Billet report said the tendering process for an independent surveyor still had to be commissioned.

Aqua-Star's Geoff Willson said his company would be able to begin work immediately if the contract for the Leopardess's replacement was approved.

The States directed the department to go back to the drawing board with its plans last year over concerns the £2.977m. vessel could be built here for less, with Aqua-Star saying that its fibreglass hull idea had been discounted even though it would save the taxpayer £447,000 in the process.
