A MAN pulled out his teeth with pliers because he could not afford to go to the dentist, a former deputy has said, as a major piece of social welfare legislation is stymied over a lack of money.

Andrew Le Lievre (pictured) – who worked on the Social Welfare Benefits Investigation Committee and now sits as a non-States member on the committee – issued a warning as to the impact the shelving of plans will have on the poorest members of society.

Employment & Social Security president Michelle Le Clerc said the work of the SWIBIC was unlikely to happen 'because we have a £24m. deficit'.

'They are not going to the doctor or dentist.

'I have met a man who pulled out his own teeth with a pair of pliers because he could not afford the dentist and that really does concern me.'
