Les Blanches 'completely the wrong place to build housing'

PRIME agricultural land, a home to wildlife and some of the island's best soil is no place for development, Les Blanches residents have said.

As they wait for the outcome of next Friday's open planning meeting – the second in the last 12 months – those living nearest to the field have been outlining just why they do not think it is the place for 26 properties – 14 apartments and 12 houses – to be built.

Howard Mauger, 70, said his grandfather used to plough the field before the war and that wanting to develop such a piece of land was nonsensical.

'It is an absolute disgrace and an insult to the people of Guernsey.'

The first application to develop the site had been made 11 years ago, he said, and this was application number four.

Mr Mauger's house directly borders the site, which had been left to start overgrowing to look more unsightly, he claimed.

Hilary Nicholl, 70, has lived in her house just behind the proposed development since 1998 and was also deeply concerned.

'I do not think it is the right place to build on. Once it is gone, you cannot get it back, you cannot put back what you have taken away. I know that we need to build houses, but why do it on good soil – we have got to think about the future generations.'
