Plans to scrap OAPs' high tax allowance are rejected

CONTROVERSIAL plans to scrap high tax allowances for over 65s as part of the 2017 Budget were rejected by deputies yesterday.

But following a day-and-a-half of debate, the Assembly voted through all of the other Budget recommendations, including higher taxes on fuel, alcohol and tobacco, cuts to the public sector and a new graduated document duty system.

Personal tax allowance will now be withdrawn gradually at a rate of £1 for every £3 that a person's income exceeds £138,684 a year.

The only proposal that was not passed, by 27-11 votes, was the removal of higher tax allowances for islanders over 65.
