'Bring back the bike tax' call runs into opposition

RE-INTRODUCING a bicycle tax could help cover the cost of road improvements made to help cyclists, Vale deputy Mary Lowe has said as she takes up the idea with Policy & Resources.

But it is a suggestion that has been met with much disapproval.

Guernsey Bicycle Group chairman Sam Field said any tax was likely to cost more to implement than it would raise, and that the idea would deter people from cycling.

Instead, he wants the States to look at cheaper options to improve riding on the island.

The tax was suggested to Home Affairs president Deputy Lowe by several Vale parishioners, who were keen for cyclists to help cover the cost of new cycle hoops and bike shelters, which have been installed by the States to encourage people onto their bikes.

They were also concerned about more than £50,000-worth of work currently taking place to improve the Salerie car park junction for bike users.

Deputy Lowe said four different parishioners had approached her, suggesting that cyclists should be taxed.

She has now emailed Policy & Resources Committee president Deputy Gavin St Pier with the idea.

'They now have cycle shelters and all those cycle hoops and they do not pay anything,' she said.
