Latest statistics in the UK showed children are becoming 'online addicts' – youngsters aged five to 15 spending five hours and 33 minutes a day glued to screens.

Pre-school children were also found to be online for an average of 71 minutes a day

While health promotion manager Yvonne Le Page, pictured, was pleased to see improvements in healthy eating figures in local students, she said: 'We are concerned about the increase in sedentary behaviour – screen time, going to school by car etc – and the percentage of young people not achieving the recommended one hour or more of physical activity per day – 64% of secondary students.

Miss Le Page recognised that there were many causes involved in the development of obesity, including biological, societal, environmental and economic drivers.

'No single intervention will be sufficient to address the problem so there needs to be a mix of activities involving all levels from government to individual actions.
