However, Matt Fallaize has also admitted not all aspects of the current scheme are perfect, and said he was willing to work with the committee on future reviews.

In addition he criticised the committee for referring to the present scheme as a 'trial'.

'It is not a trial – the States voted for universal pre-school education on a permanent basis,' he said.

'Referring to it as a trial needlessly perpetuates uncertainty.'

Education, Sport, & Culture announced last week that free pre-school provision would continue for another academic year from September.

All three- and four-year-olds are entitled to 15 hours a week of free pre-school, for the year before they start school.
