Heritage Festival offers a glimpse into our past
VISITING one of the oldest stone carvings in north-west Europe and seeing how a casemate bunker worked during the Occupation, were two of the opportunities available to the public on the first weekend of the Channel Islands Heritage Festival.
The festival, which is in its third year, began on Saturday.
This year's theme is Heroes, Myths and Legends, and until 10 May a range of different adventures, events and exhibitions take place across Guernsey's tourism sector.
There will be family adventures and history lessons, guided walks, exclusive openings of historical monuments and themed tours across the Bailiwick and Jersey.
Yesterday more than 20 people went to the Fete des Dolmens tour of the Dehus Dolmen in the Vale.
The site was excavated in the 1830s and there was an opportunity to handle some of the finds made at that time.
States archaeologist Dr Phil de Jersey led the tour, allowing people to go inside as well as look at some of the items which were discovered – including part of a jaw with teeth and part of a skull.
