A BRIGHT future could be on the horizon for Sark, the Lt-Governor has said, after he visited many of the island's businesses.

Sir Ian and Lady Corder both visited the island to officially open the Sanctuary Centre on Saturday, but they also visited many of the businesses on the island, after hearing concerns over how the island was faring.

'There were two reasons for us going over, we opened the Sanctuary, which we have been watching for some time, and it is a great community achievement that they have been working on for years,' he said.

'The other reason was that a number of people had approached me and expressed a range of concerns on how small business were getting on – so I wanted a feel for myself.'

As part of their two-day trip, Sir Ian and Lady Corder stayed in one of the island's bed and breakfasts and travelled around on bikes.

They visited the dairy herd, Caragh Chocolates, Mon Plasir Stores, the Sark microbrewery and also had a tour of businesses on the avenue – as part of this, they also invited many of the business owners to join them for a meal on Friday night.

'They are clearly facing some challenges. For an island like Sark that is very heavily dependent on tourism, they have to face the difficulties of static numbers, a small population and the closure of the hotels,' he said.
