'Very cold, very wet, but very fun'

RAIN-SODDEN and wind-swept walkers powered through the 2017 World Aid Walk, refusing to be defeated by the terrible conditions.

Despite the weather, which continued to deteriorate over the course of yesterday, just under 1,000 people turned up in teams or on their own to take part in the annual event.

Bella Farrell, chairperson of the World Aid Walk Organising Committee, said she was really happy with the turnout of people on a day such as yesterday.

'Since the first World Aid Walk started in 1970 people have raised about half a million pounds to help those in need around the world.

'This year we are supporting Christian Aid, Action Aid, Oxfam, the Eleanor Foundation, Save The Children and the Tumaini Fund.

'Despite the weather, it looking to be a good year, the whole thing is so vibrant already.'

Last year, the World Aid Walk raised £22,000, which meant the six charities received £3,500 each from the Walk, and a further £3,500 from the commission.
