Merstham inflict record defeat on Guernsey FC

GUERNSEY FC suffered their biggest ever defeat last night as they fell victim to a magnificent Merstham display in an 8-0 hammering in Ryman South.

But despite the loss, which keeps his side three points above the relegation zone, GFC manager Tony Vance believes his players did not do much wrong and the home side had simply been outstanding.

Indeed, the Merstham performance was one of the finest you could ever wish to witness.

'It might sound stupid but I don't think we were awful tonight, even though the scoreline might suggest otherwise, but they were an exceptionally good team – the best we have faced this season,' he said.

'They had strength, pace, incredible tempo and pressed intensely, so although I don't want to stand here just making it sound like a Merstham appreciation society, I have to give credit where it is due.

'Yes it was a midweek game and we had a few players unavailable, but even if we had had what some would call our strongest starting XI out tonight, then Merstham would still have beaten us, they were that good.'
