Going into their match at St Andrew's on Saturday, the chocolate-and-blues knew that victory against a resurgent Rangers would be enough – with two games to spare.
They also had the safety net of knowing that a slip-up would not matter if second-placed Sylvans did not get the win they needed at Rovers.
Ultimately that is exactly what happened, as North's poor showing in deservedly being beaten 4-1 was alleviated with news that the Westerners had lost 1-0.
It took a good few moments after the full-time whistle at St Andrew's for that information to filter through from Port Soif and, even then, North's celebrations were muted to say the least.
