An elated Martel ends his 20-year wait for glory

IT'S taken 20 years, but Roger Martel has finally won the big one – the Carey Olsen Inter-Island Challenge Race.

Martel's J122 Kaya was first across the line in St Peter Port to lead a brilliant day for the Guernsey Yacht Club contingent that filled three of the top five spots in the final standings and won all the major trophies, including the inter-insular trophy – the Sir James Knott – decided upon by the first three home from each island.

That trio of boats – Kaya, Majic and Blackjack – also won the team trophy and completed a 1-2-3 in the IRC class.
