IN THE Travers Pairs bowls preliminary round, there was a close match between Sid Le Maitre and Roy Queripel and the pairing of Mike Hullock and Reg Leadbeater and a shock defeat for Gary Collins and Craig Dorey by Steve Bichard and Derek Hurford. Gary Pitschou and Dave Lucas enjoyed a comfortable win, while the match between reigning island champions Geoff Savident and Ricky Brehaut and Vic Dorey and Bernie Simon resulted in victory for Dorey and Simon. There will be a new name on the trophy this season.

In the first round of the Elliot Singles, there were close finishes and shock results.

The closest finish possible was between Daniel de la Mare and Don Batiste playing at the Vale Rec Bowls Club, the result going to de la Mare 21-20.

There was also a close finish between Bernie Simon and Mick Merrien, the result going in Simon's favour.

In the game between two of Guernsey's 'young guns,' Craig Dorey shot down Iain Merrien, while the most notable defeat of the round was inflicted by Stan Simon on Paul Merrien 21-2.

It was not a good day for the Merrien family. Gary Pitschou, the reigning island and Channel Island singles champion will play Gary Collins on 20 June.

In the preliminary round of the Guernsey Press Singles, Ralph Deakin enjoyed a comfortable win against Dave Trebert, but it was a different story in the first round when he came up against Pitschou.

The holder of the trophy, Iain Merrien made a confident start in defence of his title when he defeated Mac Timms.

A match between two leading island bowlers saw Len Le Ber defeating Daniel de la Mare at the Vale Rec BC.
