THREE young Guernseymen will be helping the English Bowling Association celebrate its centenary by hosting a test series involving the sport's major nations between 28 July and 11 August. Ian Merrien, Craig Dorey and Daniel de la Mare join three Jerseymen in a Channel Islands side managed by John Martel, president of the Guernsey Bowling Association. The Jersey players will be Alan Shaw, Tim Murphy and Pete Le Long.
Each man will play a singles game, followed by three pairs matches.
The CI pairings are: A. Shaw (J) and T. Murphy (J); P. Le Long (J) and I. Merrien (G); D. de la Mare (G) and C. Dorey (G).
After the pairs games there will be two triples matches and for the CI trios the three Caesareans will play together and likewise the Sarnians.
Matches will be played at different venues throughout England and the Channel Islanders will be in group two along with Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and England. Scotland, USA, Australia, South Africa and Wales play in group one.
The test series road show will be played at the following venues on the following dates: 30 July - Torquay; 1 August - Plymouth; 3 August - Leamington Spa; 5 August - Gateshead; 9 and 10 August - semi-finals and finals.
The Guernsey selectors have placed their faith in three of the island's younger players who should all benefit from the experience of playing against full international players from other countries.
To enable them to compete the Guernsey Bowling Association is grateful for the assistance of the Guernsey Sports Development Unit who have provided assistance towards the expenses.
