TWO wins and a draw in their final three matches earned Vale Rec third place in their seven-team qualifying group at the Alpen Cup in Wolfsburg, Austria. Tony Clarkson's under-14s now play Danish side Kolding Bold Klub in the town's main stadium for fifth place in the 15-team tournament.
'It has been a very good end to the group stage,' said coach Tony Clarkson who had seen his 19-strong squad draw one and lose two of their opening three games.
It was also a good day for the Byrne brothers.
Rob and Jack both scored in the 2-1 victory over Denmark's Vivild IF.
Jack Byrne then scored one of the goals of the tournament in the second game of the day, a 1-1 draw with German side TSV Volkenschind.
That left the yellows requiring victory over another Danish team, Grindsted GIF2, to finish in the top three and a solitary goal by Simon Le Pelley earned them just that.
