CRAIG DOREY and Daniel de la Mare were in fine form as once again the Channel Islands rose to the challenge when the world's top bowlers moved on to Royal Leamington Spa for the third round of the EBA's Centenary test match series. After collecting eight points against Canada last Wednesday and seven against England on Friday, the three Guernsey and three Jersey players took on the might of the New Zealanders and played out of their skin to earn another seven points.

A third successive gritty display earned praise from spectators at the headquarters of the English Women's Bowling Association.

Craig Dorey came close to achieving a splendid win over three-times English and twice British Isles singles champion John Ottaway on Friday.

Despite losing 21-18, the 20-year-old Guernsey youngster boosted his confidence sufficiently to come out fighting against the Kiwis yesterday and with Daniel de la Mare, 17, giving him good support at lead, the Guernsey pairs defeated Jamie Hill and Mike Kernaghan, 18-14.

The youthful Guernsey trio of de la Mare, Dorey and Ian Merrien followed that up with an excellent 15-15 draw with Kernaghan, Russell Meyer and Paul Girdler in the triples after lunch, and de la Mare and Dorey put up good displays in the evening singles session.

De la Mare took Girdler, an experienced world and Commonwealth Games player to a 21-16 scoreline, while Dorey finished four shots adrift against Lawson, who was relieved to win 21-17.

Although the Channel Islanders seem to have lost their chance of a place in the decisive knockout stage, they could still spring a surprise if they can beat Ireland in Gateshead tomorrow.
