WHILE Guernsey's high-flying pair of Eunice Trebert and Anne Simon enjoyed a relaxing day off in the sun at Royal Leamington Spa yesterday, Australia took full advantage of the Sarnians' bye in the women's world outdoor pairs championship. The Aussies knocked the Guernsey pair off the top of the group league table, but the good news is that Trebert and Simon remain in second place and are still in line for a place in the quarters.

In fact, three teams - Australia, Guernsey and Fiji - are level at the top of the table, each with six points, but Guernsey have a game in hand over the other two, and should seal their place over their last two games.

Assuming they can beat India today and Thailand tomorrow - and they certainly should - they will finish on top of the table ahead of both of their rivals.

Talking of rivals, yesterday's triples clash was between Guernsey and Jersey; a sort of Le Quesne Trophy-style challenge, that had the wrong result as far as the Sarnians were concerned.

The match was really decided over the first three ends when Suzie Dingle's Jersey trio posted a devastating 3-4-2 sequence to lead Gwen de la Mare, Jean Simon and Jacqueline Nicolle 9-0.

The problem for Jersey involved holding on to that advantage for the next 15 ends as Guernsey tried desperately to make inroads.

The 18-10 defeat kept alive Jersey's hopes of a place in the knockout stage and pushed Guernsey down the table. They are now sixth and as good as out.
