VALE REC club duo Eunice Trebert and Anne Simon put up a great fight in the quarter-finals of the women's world outdoor pairs championship at Royal Leamington Spa yesterday, but had to give best to Welsh pair Caroline Taylor and Betty Morgan, 20-17. 'Of course we are disappointed, but we are very pleased at the same time,' said Simon.

'It was our first time together as a pair, and we lost only two games in seven - and those by three and four shots.'

Trebert added: 'We could have won if it hadn't been for one bad end.'

The end in question was the 14th, when, after closing the gap to 13-9, the Guernsey duo dropped a single and a disastrous count of six to go 20-9 down.

'I played well with my first three bowls, but was a bit overweight with my fourth and dragged the jack to the back of the rink, giving them room to add shots, said Trebert.

From 20-9 after 14 ends, the Guernsey pair scored on the last four ends, including a five, but finished three light.
